Frequently Asked Questions
Why create an appreciation space?
Research shows that people who practice appreciation are happier, healthier, and live longer. And appreciation is like a muscle—the more you use it, the stronger it gets. Think of this space as an appreciation gym.
What is “fiat”?
A fiat is a decree. “Fiat currency” is backed by government decree rather than something valuable, like gold, silver, or another commodity. U.S. dollars, euros and pesos are all fiat currencies. Modern economies run on a “fiat standard,” where government-issued money is used to exchange things of value.
Does this blog have something to do with bitcoin?
Only indirectly. Fiat money steadily loses value as governments increase the money supply. Some suggest shifting to a Bitcoin Standard because—unlike with fiat currency—the supply of bitcoin is fixed. Adopting a Bitcoin Standard in my own life gave me the freedom to step off the treadmill—retiring early and shifting my focus from earning money to appreciating the value already around me.
Some themes here may resonate with others who have embraced Bitcoin. But this blog isn’t about economics or investing, and you don’t need to care about the fiat-Bitcoin debate to participate.
How is the “fiat cost” calculated in your posts?
I calculate cost based on prices at time of publication, using publicly available sources. For groceries, I use Walmart’s online prices for local pickup in Phoenix, Arizona.
Can I submit an idea for appreciation?
Please! Ideas are welcome in the comments of each post and on our Community Appreciations page.
Can I promote my business – or a business owned by my family member or close friend – in your comments or Community Appreciations page?
No. Promoting the work of those we love is wonderful—but not here. It’s outside the mission of this project.
